THE CRAFT OF NEEDLE FELTING

Picture
Each of my designs starts with a fluff of carded, unspun merino wool, which is rather like candy floss (but not as sticky). I begin shaping the basic form by gently 'stabbing' the wool repeatedly with two special purpose barbed needles.  When I get the body to a more finished state, I work with one needle.

It's a time consuming and exact process which uses no pattern and relies entirely on the skill of the artist. One of my toys will take an average of 20+ hours to complete. Below is a demonstration of needle felting in action, made by me in 2008.
